Will loves his tiger. He has had it since before he was born. Tiger’s name is officially Tigey (most definitely after Daniel Tiger’s stuffed animal from PBS). Until Will went to school TIgey went everywhere with us.
Being the smart mom, I made sure that Tigey was left in the car or at home when we went certain places. One day, I wasn’t careful enough. Tigey went on an adventure.
We went to Bubbe’s beach early one morning and get a great shady parking spot. We spent as long as possible playing in the waves, digging in the sand and soaking up the sun. Then it was time to go.
All our belongings were gathered and taken to the car. We rinsed off in the shower and were putting on our after-beach clothes. Other cars were looking for spots, so I hurriedly put everything in the car. And I continually told the kids, “Hurry up!”
Sometime in the crazy, Will said to me “Mommy I dropped Tigey.” At this point he was buckled into his seat and I didn’t want him to get out. So I told him “I’ll get it.”
I didn’t.
We got back to Bubbe’s house and I asked Will, “Where is Tigey?” He didn’t seem to know. I looked in the car, around the car, all over the house and finally realized I left Tigey at the beach. Will even said “Mommy I told you I dropped him and you didn’t pick him up.”
I convinced my in-laws that it was worth the drive back to take a look.
Tigey is not just an ordinary stuffed animal. My grandmother bought Tigey before she passed away, before Will was even a thought in our family. Since Lizzie and Evelyn had an animal from GG, I figured if I had another child, this one would have an animal from GG also.
I was devastated, each kid had an animal from GG, and Tigey was Will’s. And I lost Tigey.
As I pulled into the parking lot, there was one spot open. I parked and immediately began to look. I started with our parking spot. I looked all around, under the cars parked by the spot. I was worried especially since the car that took our spot was already gone. I even checked a few truck beds and peaked into cracked windows. I was desperate.
Finally, I stopped and took a moment to think “If I found stuffed animal where would I put it.”
The picnic table.
As I turned, I saw that someone had put Tigey up on the table. A couple of people were walking by and I heard, “Oh, someone lost their stuffed animal.” Tigey was on the picnic table. Someone had propped him up in a sitting position. He looked very sad sitting there without a little boy to love him. I grabbed him and hugged him and told the people, it was my son’s.
After returning to Bubbe’s house, I got a half-hearted “Thank you” but Tigey got a big hug and lots of kisses. No one could believe he was still there.
Now we check for stuffed animals every time we leave the house. I check for my four kids and then I check for Puppy, Puppy, Tigey and Baby the sheep.
There will be no animal left behind by our family again!
