It is 4:30 a.m. and soon I will want my morning cup of coffee. I never liked or drank coffee until I became a parent. But now I drink one cup every morning with some kind of creamer.
But who will make this coffee for me? I am horrible at making traditional coffee. No matter how many times someone tells me, I always get the ratio of grounds to water wrong for my taste. I know some people don’t care what their coffee taste like as long as it is hot and black. I know I don’t want sludge and I don’t want water flavored coffee!
So, who makes it? Why Will of course! You see every morning he makes coffee for mommy. Daddy fills the pot, changes the filter and adds the grounds, but Will has the most important job. He pushes the button that starts the coffee maker. Then usually runs to find me to tell me “I made coffee for you Mommy!”
This is something that started before my daughter Evelyn went to school. She would make coffee with Daddy. Now Evelyn is getting ready for school in the mornings and it is now Will’s job. One day Will will start school and his brother will inherit the job.
Lizzie was lamenting that she never got to make coffee for mommy. You see the job started after she had started going to school. She was told that by the time Casey goes to school, the job will be passed to her. But instead of just pushing the button, she will actually make the coffee. She will be tall enough and big enough to pour in the water and the grounds and push the button all by herself. She seems to have mixed reactions about this since she is always wanting to do grown up and ‘big people’ things but she realizes this is still be a few years away.
This growing up stuff could slow down. Still my favorite part of morning is not necessarily the coffee, although it helps. It is when Will runs to me and tells me he made coffee. I then get a kiss and an “I love you” from him and that is what makes my day.
