Every grandparent has to be called something.
My mother-in-law was super smart and picked something easy to say that the kids would all pick up quickly. She is affectionately known as Bubbe. Often the spelling gets changed a bit, but my kids love their Bubbe more than any Bubbe is loved.
Papa Mike is Bubbe’s husband. The don’t care about blood relatives or marriage or anything like that. He is their Papa Mike and they love when they get to visit him and Bubbe.
When Lizzie was old enough to talk we attempted to get her to call my dad “Granddad” after his father. But Lizzie had her own plans, one morning in his backyard, she pointed and declared “That’s PopPop.” So from that morning on, he was PopPop to Lizzie and every sibling that came along.
My mom was excited to be a Grandma from day one and taught all her grandkids to call her this. Occasionally there has been a “grandmamama” or a ‘grammy’.
Then came Casey. For a while, he tried to change this and call my mom “Mimi.’ Every time he sees her, he calls out “Mimi, Mimi”. This started out being serious, but has turned into a game. He will call her Grandma when he wants to, but it is more fun to call her Mimi. He will squeal “That’s Mimi”, she answers back “my name is Grandma, Grandma, Grandma. And Casey will laugh and laugh as if no one has caught on to what he doing.
No matter what they call them, my kids have the best grandparents in the world and are smothered in love every time they see them.
