When Lizzie was little, there was a day when we needed to be outside, but didn’t particularly want to go to the park. In our carport was a garbage can full of aluminum cans. If you recycle cans, you know that you need to squish cans. If nothing else, it allows you to transport more cans to the recycler thus getting more money.
Lizzie and I sat on the steps and watched Dad line cans on the ground, then with a giant stomp, he squished them. Liz thought this was pretty cool and was even more excited when she was able to help pick up the cans and put them back in the garbage can.
Over the years each kids has been incorporated into this activity. Each one waiting patiently on the steps for dad to squish the cans so they too can get off the steps and help pick them up.
Now, they are all old enough to line the cans up all by themselves so dad can squish them. They still race to pick up the cans, but now added is someone crying because she only picked up a few cans or his sibling picked up the can he wanted.
Eventually, we take the cans to the recycler. Until that day, we squish!
