Every week when I go grocery shopping, I take a list written in a spiral notebook. This list has items organized by store and when I am really organized, it has each item listed by aisle. As I go shopping, I keep a running tally of how much everything costs and how much I am spending.
Before Evelyn started pre-school, she loved going grocery shopping. She would help me put items in the cart and would cross them off the list as we went. After I paid, she would take my notebook and pen and draw pictures on the empty pages.
During that year I would find little pictures scattered throughout old lists and filling up empty pages where a new list would be written. At first I was aggravated, but realized she would be off to school and these pictures would only show up in the summer or not at all.
Casey is picking up where Evelyn left off. Will has no desire to draw in my book and just wants to help put things in the cart. Casey thinks it is pretty fun to scribble in mommy’s book and is quite serious about the task. Just about every page has a mark on it by his little hand.
So for now I will enjoy the pictures while I can, for one day my list will only be a grocery list.
On the other hand, if there are no scribbles, it means I got to go grocery shopping all by myself!
